Modding in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is not allowed, and could end up with getting your account banned or other action from Nintendo.
However, that hasn’t stopped some players from trying it anyway. These five mods are the most creative and fun ones we’ve seen to date. Enjoy the efforts below, but if you decide to try it for yourself, do so at your own risk, we don’t condone nor recommend that you do.
Playable BowsetteBest Zelda: Breath of the Wild Mods
The first one (done by Lynard Killer) on our list of the best Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild mods gives us a Bowsette character swap. If you don’t know where Bowsette came from, the creation popped into existence by way of the Super Crown.
This Crown turns Toadette into Peachette, which of course, confused the internet. Someone then thought, “hey, what would happen if Bowser put on the Super Crown?”
Bowsette is the result. With this well-designed skin, not only does it turn Link into Bowsette but her mannerisms are different from Link’s as well. The trailer shows her wielding a flaming sword and let me tell you that Bowsette is way cooler than Link will ever be.
For more info, you can check out Lynards YouTube page.
Kingdom Hearts X HyruleBest Zelda: Breath of the Wild Mods
If you are a fan of Kingdom Hearts and Breath of the Wild, then this mod right here might get you very very excited. This one, by YamGaming, brings Sora and his Key Blade into the world of Hyrule. If you’ve ever dreamed of fighting Ganon with a Key Blade over the Master Sword then now you can live out your dream.
You can even change the dye colors on Sora’s costume letting you customize his outfit until you find the perfect combo of colors. You can find info about this mod over at Gamebanana.
Cloud Strife and His Buster SwordBest Zelda: Breath of the Wild Mods
This mod replaces the Soldier set in Breath of the Wild with Cloud Strife’s outfit from the recent Dissidia game and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. His blond spiky hair flows beautifully in the wind, and once you get your hands on the motorcycle that’s offered in the DLC, you can live out a fantasy of Cloud riding around Hyrule.
Being that this would be Cloud’s first solo mission without his ragtag group of friends, using the Buster Sword will be your only means of combat. Nobody will be around to heal you as Aerith did in Final Fantasy VII before she… you know…
Thanks to Austin for this gameplay video showing the mod in action. You can find more info on the Cloud mod and the Buster Sword mod here and here.
Mario and CappyBest Zelda: Breath of the Wild Mods
This Breath of the Wild mods switches Link out for another Nintendo hero, Mario and his trusty hat, Cappy. This Breath of the Wild mod changes the boomerang that players are used to into Mario’s cap, even changing the physics making the hat throw feel similar to Super Mario Odyssey.
Mario and Link have been together in side games, but nothing this ambitious. What better way than to run around a dangerous world with just a hat on your head? How cool would it be to defeat Ganon with just an accessory? Cappy taking down Ganon would be quite the upset.
You can watch the mod in action right here and for more info on downloading Mario to Breath of the Wild, check out Gamebanana.

Zelda Takes the SpotlightBest Zelda: Breath of the Wild Mods
We’ve never gotten a proper game in the Zelda series that actually stars the princess herself, but with this Breath of the Wild mod, fans can now play as the girl that possesses the wisdom piece of the Triforce.
Oh and this isn’t just a skin of Zelda simply placed on Link’s model. There is voice acting that was created just for this version of Zelda; there are exclusive costumes just for her and even her paraglider has a different look than Link’s.
The bulk of this playable Zelda mod was created by a modder that goes by QNando, but several other people helped out on the paraglider and Zelda’s voice-overs; you can check out this mod right here.
Well, those are our picks for some of the best Zelda: Breath of the Wilds mods out there right now! If you happen to come across any cool ones, please be sure to let us know down in the comments below.
Princess Zelda spends most of Breath of the Wild sealed away in Hyrule Castle along with Calamity Ganon but an ongoing mod project is working hard to give her an adventure of her own. The Zelda Conversion project will let players explore the world as Zelda, adding new armor and story tweaks.
The project started when two modders, WilianZilv and Skriller, set out to make a Zelda model that would fit over Link’s. Zelda only appears in pre-rendered cutscenes during the game, and they could not find a full Zelda model in the game’s files. Eventually, they discovered that the game had an unfinished model for Zelda that didn’t have any limbs which provided the base they could build off. Their work caught the attention of a modder name Ainz, who wanted to see if they could do more than simply let players use her character model.

The hope is to have a public release in the future for the Wii U and CEMU emulator before finding a way to bring the mod to the Nintendo Switch as well. Periodic updates can be found on this YouTube channel. A release date has not been set in stone yet.
“We plan on having an initial release really soon so it’s a bit of a secret,” Ainz said.

WilianZilv
Welcome to the wacky world of mods for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Grab some popcorn and join us as we look at some of the wackiest things you can do to the game.
1. Play as Waluigi
Play as everyone’s least appreciated Mario character Waluigi. Links lanky form is a surprisingly good fit for Waluigi’s legendary lankiness. While the mod lacks Waluigi’s trademake “Wahs,” the mod does make it look like Waluigi is playing his long nose like an Ocarina every time he whistles for Epona so it has that going for it.
Here’s the download link (ha ha get it?).
2. Play as Zelda
Are you sad that there’s no female link or playable Zelda? Tired of the frankly weak justification Director Eiji Aonuma gave as to why there’s no playable Zelda? Well look no further because this upcoming mod from WilianZilv and Skilar Babcock will let you finally play as Zelda.
3. Play as Woody & Fly With Buzz
Now you don’t need to wait 1,000 years for Kingdom Hearts III to see Woody of Toy Story in HD glory. The attention to detail is great; it even nailed the way Woody’s legs and arms bend. Download resident evil pc. Sadly the snakes in boots are not included.
You can also download this mod to replace the glider with Buzz, recreating the climax of the first Toy Story movie.
4. Play as Minecraft’s Steve Complete with Diamond Sword
Minecraft’s Steve is very much at home with the sandbox, naturalistic world of Breath of the Wild. You can even download a separate mode to get his diamond sword. Unfortunately he’ll find that the diamond swords are way less durable in this world.
5. Fight Shrek
Somebody once told me that you can replace the Hinox enemies with a giant Shrek. And why wouldn’t you?
6. Ride Thomas the Tank Engine
Before you take on Shrek, why don’t you ride into battle in style by riding atop the useful engine Thomas. This mod replaces the Giant Horses with the titular character of the beloved Thomas & Friends.
7. Running in the Wild
If you want an even sweeter ride, consider this mod that lets you play as the Toyota AE86 from Initial D complete with manga-style motion lines. Slide on a shield for the best drifting results.
Zelda Breath Of The Wild Mod Linkle8. Play as Kratos
The Legend of Zelda has some parallels to Greek mythology, so it’s only fitting to plop Kratos from God of War in there. Be sure to add his Blade of Chaos in there as well.
Kratos skin & Blade of Chaos download links.
9. Play as Goku
Need something a bit more super in Breath of the Wild? Look no further than this epic mod that lets you play as Goku complete with his Flying Nimbus.
10. Then There’s Whatever This Is
A guy dressed kinda sorta like Sonic going fast? Why not?
